Dovetail

It was on this day, 30 years ago, Mecca Normal‘s album “Dovetail” was released on K Records. We recorded the 11 songs in the cavernous Capital Theatre in Olympia where Patrick Maley had his Yo Yo studio at the time. The album featured “Throw Silver”. Here are a couple of very different cover versions of the song:

Mark Jenkins reviewed the album in The Washington Post: “Throw Silver, which opens this Canadian duo’s latest, has a pretty folk-style melody, but the folkie side of the band (also reflected in David Lester’s finger-picking guitar style) is paced by Jean Smith’s cryptic lyrics and furious delivery. The ingredients are simple, but counterpoint keeps the twosome’s limited timbres interesting: Smith sometimes adds her frantic guitar scrapings to Lester’s more traditional playing, and she trades vocals with herself on “Clatter.” The result is edgy, unpredictable and always potentially explosive.”
